Middleton, WI.  Officials of the 2004 Great Lakes Biomedical Conference have received confirmation that Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle will deliver an address at this year’s event on June 4 at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

Governor Doyle will join corporate and academic leaders from the fields of life sciences and biomedical engineering who will present and discuss research investments and alliances.

The conference theme is “From Vision to Reality.”  Over 37 speakers from leading corporations, law firms, and 15 major Midwest research institutions will present new technologies for life sciences, imaging, devices, and bioinformatics.  Seminars also will cover best practices for attracting investments and strategic alliances, and for protecting intellectual property.

In addition, the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers will hear final presentations by engineering student competitors in its regional student paper competition, and other students from multiple universities will present research posters.

“The Great Lakes Biomedical Conference represents another major step to heighten the visibility of Wisconsin’s great research and development engines, and those throughout the Midwest,” Governor Doyle said.  “I applaud the universities, researchers, and corporate leaders for promoting the biomedical industry.”

“Governor Doyle has demonstrated a clear commitment to advancing biomedical research and commercialization, and his support of this partnering conference confirms that commitment,” said Chuck Oehler, President of The Oehler Group, speaking on behalf of the GLBC Planning Committee.

Among the many scientific and industry leaders addressing the event will be Professor Richard Robb, Director of the College of Medicine and Biomedical Imaging at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, Dr. Suzanne Lebold, VP, Global Pharmaceutical Business Development, Abbott Laboratories, Abbott Park, IL, Chris Unger, Chief Engineer-Global Components Engineering, GE Medical Systems, Waukesha, WI, Dr. Thomas Mackie, Professor of Medical Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Co-founder of Tomotherapy, a successful cancer therapy firm spun out from the UW-Madison, and Dr. Peter Tonellato, Founder of Point One Systems, a successful bioinformatics firm spun-out of the Medical College of WI.  Attorneys Charles Sara, Thomas Miller and Mark Kassel of the DeWitt Ross and Stevens, Michael Best and Friedrich, and Foley and Lardner law firms will present a seminar on strategies for intellectual property protection.
