In the mid-1990's the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) proposed a collection of videoconferencing standards that resulted in more interoperable products at considerably reduced prices. We will study these in greater detail later in this course. For now, here they are: H.320 - higher bandwidth point-to-point standard, for example implemented using ISDN H.324 - lower bandwidth point-to-point standard, intended primarily for lower-cost videophone that use the standard telephone (POTS) line. H.323 - IP-based conferencing. Additionally, as we will see later in the course, standards associated with other technical advances have had an impact, including technical standards associated with the Internet, cellphones, and wireless connectivity. Considerable amounts of money - indeed, the future of many companies - rides with such standards. By the end of this class, you will know the basics of these standards, and their impact, well!
