Clinical rehabilitation practitioner speciality areas (and key professional societies):

Infrastructure:

Most states have at least one comprehensive rehabilitation hospital for adults, and often a children's hospital. The vast majority of inpatients at most of these hospitals are in the area of neurorehabilitation, and indeed this includes the three largest populations (stroke, traumatic brain injury, and spinal cord injury). However, the largest populations of persons with disability are in the musculoskeletal area, especially arthritis. Thus outpatient care is very broad-based, and include neurorehabilitation, orthopedic/musculoskeletal rehabilitation, and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation. Many persons with functional impairment have co-morbidities, and multiple functional impairments.

A good way to get a sense for the role of assistive technology in rehabilitation is to look at the RENSA's SIGs (special interest groups) and PSGs (professional specialty groups).

Another way is to look at rehabilitation research infrastructure, in particular NIDRR's 22 RERC's and the VAMC's R&D Centers.
