Outline for Module 1, Part 5 - Rehab Process as an Optimization Problem

Introduction. All of the allied health professions describe their role with concepts that the engineer associates with the optimization process. In the classic engineering optimization problem, the goal is to alter a control strategy so as to maximize or minimize some type of "performance critierion" of interest. From the context of rehabilitation, the idea is to design an intervention plan that balances maximizing desirable outcomes (or "benefits") with minimizing costs and other undesirable effects. Examples of desirable outcomes are:

  • minimizing impairments and disability,
  • maximizing independence and/or participation,
  • maximizing the ability to perform key activities of importance to the person,
  • maximizing "quality of life" measures.

Here we provide a simple introduction of the optimziation process and its relevance.
