TEXT: Hibbeler, R.C., Engineering Mechanics-Statics, 8th Edition, Prentice-Hall, Inc., 1998.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

Fundamentals of forces and force systems. Application to particles and bodies in equilibrium. Emphasizing vector methods in two and three dimensions. Free body diagrams with and without friction. Centroids and moment of inertia.

PREREQUISITES:

Algebra, Analytic Geometry, Trigonometry, Definite Integrals.

COURSE GOALS:

1. Give you a tool to solve many engineering problems;

2. Prepare you for future courses in mechanics (ENME 020, ENME 130 and ENME 151) and in your major (e.g., CEEN 110, MEEN 142);

3. Prepare you for Fundamentals of Engineering Examination.

OBJECTIVES:

By the time you have successfully finished this course you should be able to:

CREDITS: 3

TIME:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday 10:00 - 10:50 am

INSTRUCTOR AVAILABLE TO STUDENTS:

Office Hours: Monday and Wednesday 11:00 am - 1:50 pm.

Available additional hours by appointment (arranged through personal contact, phone call, or e-mail message). E-mail and voice mail messages receive prompt attention.

MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT:

A straight edge, protractor, compass, ruler, calculator with trigonometric functions, engineering paper or paper with square grid, three-ring binder for handouts and homework. A mechanical pencil and a good quality eraser.

OTHER RESOURCES:

Binders will be on reserve in the Science Library (560 North 16th Street). Homework solutions, handouts, etc. will be added to the binders throughout the semester for student use.

ATTENDANCE POLICY:

You should be in class on time. If for any reason you expect that you will be late, you should let the instructor know ahead of time and arrange to have a seat near the door. If the instructor is not informed, you should not come in the classroom late.

Attendance is required and will be monitored. Excessive absences will result in lowering class grade by half a letter grade, according to the College of Engineering guidelines. Emergency absences due to illness or other personal emergency should be reported to the Engineering Office. If you missed a class, you should make sure to get class notes, handouts and any changes in assigned homework from your classmates.

TEST GRADE APPEALS:

Every effort is made to grade exams fairly, however, errors may occur. You may appeal your exam grade bearing in mind the following points:

1. The whole exam will be re-evaluated and the new grade might be higher or lower than your initial grade.

2. Any attempt to alter the original exam will automatically result in appropriate academic action.

HOMEWORK:

Homework is to be turned in at the beginning of the class period in which it is due. Late homework will not be graded. Homework is usually due the second class period after the material is discussed in class.

Homework will be graded on the following four-point scale:

4 points Work is complete, correct and neat.

3 points Work has minor problems (ex. missing units).

2 points A "critical" error has been made at some point.

1 point The solution is wrong, but an attempt has been made to solve the problem (merely copying the problem from the book does not count as attempting to solve the problem).

0 points No significant attempt has been made to solve the problem.

A few problems may be graded differently (you will be notified of the grading scale when the problems are assigned).

EXAMINATIONS:

There will be three tests during the semester and a final examination. Tentative days will be announced soon. Check for the time and date of the final exam in the back cover of the timetable of classes.

FINAL EXAMINATION:

A common examination will be given to all ENME 010 sections on Saturday, December 18, 1999. Make sure you are present for this test-you may not take the final exam at any other time.

GRADING:

Final Exam (cumulative-see date above): 25%

Tests (3 @ 20% each) 60%

Homework and Quizzes* 15%

* A maximum of two unannounced quizzes will be given during the semester and will be part of the Homework component of the grade.

Note:

Poor attendance will result in lowering class grade according to College of Engineering guidelines.
