Hurricane Katrina Relief Camp Coastal Outpost Work Camp Kiln, Mississippi, USA

THE NEED...
Hurricane Katrina struck the Gulf region of the United States in late August 2005. The category 5 storm caused billions of dollars of damage, killed more than 2800 people, and displaced hundreds of thousands of families.

The town of Kiln, Mississippi is located in Hancock County, where 70% of its buildings were destroyed in the storm. New home construction is the highest priority and an essential step in the region.



THE COMMUNITY...
Camp Coastal Outpost, one of the many organizations working to provide area, received a cash donation from a generous international donor to aid with building of new homes for deserving recipients. With plenty of funding for and a huge demand for homes, only one element was missing: volunteers.



OUR RESPONSE...
In December 2006, a group of EWB undertook our first recovery trip. Based in the Coastal Outpost in Kiln, Mississippi, construction of homes. The group was and worked on installing shingles, windows, insulation, building decks, and laying. A second trip to the same region occurred 15 more students returned to the region. MOVING FORWARD...
Everybody had stories to share about friends, the long process of recovery, work left to be done, and our chapter will keep going back once a semester for years to come.
