Welcome

Research suggests immersive experiences that allow for motion in realistic environments promote active learning, critical thinking, improved decision making and better performance.
MARVL contains shared resources dedicated to creating content for this purpose through research, teaching, industry and outreach initiatives.

Collaborate Now
Experiences that allow for motion within a realistic environment promote active learning, critical thinking, decision making and improved performance. For example, a novice sailor is more likely to recall specific instruction when it is learned and practiced on water rather than on land, or read from a book. This is the basis for the MARquette Visualization Laboratory (MARVL) in Engineering Hall, a facility to be used by members of the entire Marquette University community and Southeastern Wisconsin to (1) demonstrate how visualization technology can be used in learning, research, and industry, (2) teach the theory rooted in this technology, and (3) create technologically advantageous visualization content.

The process of planning the MARVL facility began in late 2007. Since that time members of the Marquette community were identified using various approaches. Meetings were then held over an 18 month period with interested users regarding their potential use of a visualization facility. Many of these individuals shared extensive visions with specific objectives geared towards research and teaching, as well as industry collaboration and outreach. Construction was comple
ted in late 2013 and MARVL opened on January 16, 2014 with its first demonstration of unique visualization content.

MARVL - Make It Real, See Within!

Expertise across all stereoscopic platforms

MARVL collaborators have access to all of our resources including our development lab and large scale immersive CAVE environment  that accommodates up to 40 people. Head-mounted displays are also available to deliver content remotely. Specifically, MARVL also has experience developing exceptional content for the Oculus Rift, GearVR and HoloLens, among others.

 Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)

Over 15 years of computational simulation expertise with the capability of translating any CFD results and complementary data (e.g. histology, functional assays, etc.) into an immersive virtual reality experience.

Architectural Pre-Visualization & Restoration

Bring 2D plan and elevation, CAD drawings, and photogrammetry data to life! Virtual replication of existing, prior and conceptualized structures can also be created by members of our team.

Building Information Modeling (BIM)

An interactive tool used by architects, engineers, designers, and project managers that virtually represents the functional and physical characteristics of any building.

Scientific Data Visualization

The complexity of data generated by many current scientific approaches can be overwhelming and difficult to understand. We use intuitive approaches that leverage depth cues and multiple dimensions to accentuate key aspects of data sets within virtual spaces. This provides an effective method to studying and communicating important features in scientific results.

Athletics &  Wellness Activities

Quantify the response time of athletes within our large-scale immersive environment. We also specialize in creating immersive environments for fitness and wellness classes that allow for live or virtual instruction while cycling, dancing, kickboxing, performing yoga, or meditating in a variety of stunning, energetic, and relaxing backgrounds.
