FASN Educational Mission

To provide high-quality technical education that blends theory/abstraction with hands-on, real-world application. To help engineering and technical professionals become more effective problem solvers in industrial automation.

Why We Care:

Automation is challenging. Investing in hardware/software alone does not solve the challenges; a competent workforce is required for sucessful automation. FASN is here to invest in worker-competence.

  • Technicians
  • Operations managers

Approach

FASN Educational Emphasis

FASN emphasizes both theory and application for learning that leads to better, real-world problem solving ability.

  • Theory
  • Application
  • Problem solving

Figure

Vendor specific workshops focus on how to do A, B, and C tasks using X, Y, Z hardware components/software instructions. The primary learning objective is the use of the hardware/software.

For FASN workshops, the learning objectives are fundamental theory and conceptual frameworks – these are abstract problem-solving tools that apply broadly to many tasks with various hardware/software implementations. In FASN workshops, specific hardware and software tools are used as a means for learning the theory/concepts.

FASN Educational Strategy

FASN uses a blend of theory and conceptual exercises, guided applications, and independent applications for retained learning and enhanced problem-solving ability.

  • Theory & conceptual exercises
  • Guided application
  • Independent application

FASN workshops typically introduce theory/concepts with preparation (e.g., lecture) and conceptual exercises. Hands-on, guided applications of learned concepts demonstrate the utility of the learned material and show how to apply it. Independent, goal-oriented, hands-on exercises promote critical thinking and system thinking and provide opportunities to identify where learned concepts can be applied. The result is retained learning and enhanced problem-solving ability.
